Andrew Johnson

Andrew Johnson (December 29, 1808 - July 31, 1875) was the President 17 United States (1865-1869). Following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, Johnson presided over the era of reconstruction of the United States within four years after the Civil War. Its mandate has been very controversial that his positions in favor of the white South has been heavy political attack Republicans. Upon the secession of Southern states, Johnson was a U.S. senator from Greeneville in eastern Tennessee. In unionist, he was the only Southern senator not to leave his post to secession. He became the most important Democrat War South and supported the military policies Lincoln during the Civil War of 1861-1865.In 1862, Lincoln appointed Johnson military governor of the occupied part of Tennessee, where he proved energetic and effective in the fight against the rebellion and early transition to reconstruction. Johnson was nominated for vice president in 1864 on the National Union Party ticket. He and Lincoln were elected in November 1864 and inaugurated March 4th, 1865.
